The Mount Vernon High School girls track and field team had a busy week of competition highlighted by a trip to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays on April 26. They ran in front of a crowd of almost 24,000 people against teams from the United States, Jamaica, the Bahamas and South Africa. A very young squad of freshmen Brianna Coleman, Kaleigh Winner and Alliyah Stevens, along with junior Bria Patnett and senior Nichole Parker, had the opportunity to run against a team from Long Beach Poly (California) who are the US record holders. These talented athletes represented Mount Vernon on one of the biggest stages in the sport of running.

They followed this performance by winning the 4 by 400 meter relay title at the XBC Experience Invitational last Saturday, beating teams from Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William Counties, as well as teams from Maryland. The team of Bria Patnett, Kaleigh Winner, Alliyah Stevens, and Nichole Parker ran away from the field in the middle of a downpour. In addition to winning the relay title, medals were earned by senior Karissa Cameron (3^rd, discus throw), Alliyah Stevens (4^th, 100 meter hurdles), Kaleigh Winner (3^rd, 400 meter dash), Bria Patnett (4^th, 400 meter dash), and Brianna Coleman (5^th, 100 meter dash).

Nichole Parker continues to hold the National District #1 spot in the 400 meter dash, where the Majors hold 3 of the top 4 fastest times. Karissa Cameron leads the district in the discus throw, and the Lady Majors 4 by 400 meter relay team also rank #1, and sit #8 in the Northern Region.

On the MVHS boys track and field team, junior Michael Brown won 3 events at the XBC Experience Invitational last Saturday to earn the meet MVP award. He captured the 100m, 200m and long jump titles in state qualifying performances. Brown's performance in the 100 meter dash was a meet record and now leads the state of Virginia. Brown also leads the state in the long jump.

Michael Brown, teaming with Ricky West, Bashan Williams and Josh Beko also won the 4 by 100 meter relay title. Also earning times were Ricky West in the 400 (4th) and Williams in the 100. Strong performances were also given by Adel Lahlou and Adulem Belachew who each ran district qualifying personal records in the 800m and 3200m, respectively.

The Majors are gearing up for the National District Championships being held at Thomas Edison next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 8 and 9.
