Del. Surovell, Volunteers Remove Tons of Trash from Little Hunting Creek.

In 2005, Little Hunting Creek was named “Trashiest Creek in Fairfax County.”
This past weekend, Del. Scott Surovell (D-44th) and other volunteers did their best to make sure the creek doesn't win that title again.
Surovell held his third cleanup this year of Little Hunting Creek, near the Sequoyah Condominiums and Janna Lee apartments in the Hybla Valley section of Fairfax County. The creek continues to be declared impaired due to e-coli bacterial impairments and polychlorinated biphenyls.
On Saturday, 30 volunteers helped remove the trash from the creek. Volunteers included students from multiple area elementary, middle and high schools. A team of volunteers from New Hope Housing also participated.
This past Saturday’s cleanup netted over two tons of trash including 37 shopping carts, 51 bags of cans, bottles and plastic bags, more than two dozen balls (football, basketballs, soccer balls, baseballs), 12 tires, five gallon gas cans, three bicycles, three paint cans and much more.

I'll echo Barbara's comments. It is a shame that THREE clean-ups are needed in a year (and I'll bet Scott would say there's a lot more to be done). This is the act of people who care about our area, and they deserve a hearty thanks.

Thanks Scott! I grew up fishing Little Hunting Creek and it is an awesome natural retreat in Mount Vernon! Plant, birds, animals and fish! Now if we could get the people to live in harmony with this natural resource.
