More than 1,000 homes in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County woke up Sunday morning with no power.
"There was a one-car accident around 2 a.m. in the Mount Vernon area that hit several power poles and damaged them, knocking out power to 1,328 homes," Dominion spokesman Rick Zuercher said.
The crash took place along Mount Vernon Highway between Stephies Court and Sunny View Drive. The road will be shut off most of Sunday while repair work is being done. Zuercher estimated power would be back on between 5-7 p.m. Sunday.
"Typically we re-route using other circuits but we don't have that capability in that area," Zuercher said.
The temperatures in Mount Vernon are below freezing Sunday morning, about 29 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast is for a high of 37 degrees with a 40 percent chance of snow.
