Fire Engulfs Home on Fielding Street in Mount Vernon

A family of four was displaced. Fire may have started outside the home.

(UPDATE 4:35 p.m.):

Firefighters say the fire that engulfed a home on Fielding Street in Mount Vernon Thursday afternoon may have started outside.

"I don't want to speculate, but it was around the time school buses were dropping kids off and parents weren't around," said Andrew Duke, deputy chief, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

"A bystander on a cell phone called and said that a fire started outside the building and then spread to the inside," Duke told Patch.

Fire investigators are on the scene. The two adults and two children are being helped by the Red Cross to find shelter.

"That fire was huge," said neighbor Alan Smolins. "Luckily the siding of my house was not damaged."

Firefighters had the fire under control within about 4 to 5 minutes, firefighters said.

I live nearby the home. The school bus dropped off the kids and a neighbor noticed smoke coming out the front picture window. A few minutes later, with sirens in the distance, the house was engulfed. No one heard an explosion. The car in the carport also caught on fire. The house is rented by a very nice family from Saudi Arabia.

I live around the corner and can see this home from my kitchen window. The flames engulfed the entire front of the home and smoke blanketed the neighborhood. Unfortunately the elementary school had let out and a lot of kids were coming down to see what was going on. At 4:30 PM there are still several emergency vehicles on the street. Can only hope no one was injured, it was a pretty big fire.

Apparently the family is OK but were displaced by the fire; they're being helped re a place to stay for the time being by the American Red Cross, from what we were told.
