Friends of Sherwood Regional Library Hosts Ongoing Book Sale
The book sale helps raise funds for the library.
Every day, the Friends of Sherwood Regional Library hosts a book sale at the library.
The Friends of Sherwood Regional Library have hosted the book sale for nearly two decades, member Dan Barolo said.
“We have the opportunity to publicize events, make money in certain ways, and then money can be directly used by the library for different purposes: buying books, furniture, computer, children’s programs in the summer, refreshments for clubs,” Barolo said.
The book sale is a crucial fundraiser for the library, even more so since Fairfax County has cut its budget for libraries across the county. Revenue from the book sale goes back to the library to assist in purchasing supplies and equipment which are not in the formal library budget.
“We can’t supplant all money that’s been cut,” Barolo explained. “But we can help in certain areas.”
The book sale raises between $25,000 and $50,000 annually. The Friends also provide books to service organizations including local senior centers, military bases, charities, and homeless shelters.
Ten book sale volunteers help by sorting, evaluating, and placing books on shelves, but volunteers are always appreciated. To volunteer, visit Sherwood Regional Library and pick up the volunteer form.
The Friends of Sherwood Regional Library also welcome donations of materials for the book sale. Books from many categories are accepted, including nonfiction, fiction, history, biography, religion, sports, art, and music. VHS and DVD movies, books on tape or CD and music CDs are also appreciated. For more information on donating books, visit the Friends of Sherwood Regional Library blog.
