Generosity Shines at Good Shepherd Housing Annual Gala

Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services hosted its annual fundraiser this weekend.

Mount Vernon-area residents turned out Saturday night to support Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services’ annual fundraiser gala at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Old Town Alexandria.

“We’re very pleased to have the turnout that we have,” said Chris Martin, treasurer of the board. “We’d love to have more people from the community come and join us. It’s a really fun event; a great way to support the cause.”

The evening included live and silent auctions, with items ranging from fine dining certificates to an African adventure. Live entertainment was provided by Reverie, a Northern Virginia-based jazz trio.

The event also honored Mattie Palmore, recipient of the organization’s Joseph T. Adinaro Award. Palmore recently retired from GSH after 15 years of serving the community.

“It’s truly an honor. But I do this from the heart, not for the rewards that you get,” said Palmore.

The fundraising goal for this year was set at $250,000. Proceeds from the gala will help to provide housing and counseling services for low-income families and individuals along the Route 1 corridor.

“We have done very, very well over the past few years and we hope to do as well this year,” said Rosemary Murray, vice president of the board of directors.
