You can see how the chamber is made up by the following categories:
- Political Party: Did you know the House has one Independent member?
- Gender: Women make up 18 percent of the House and 17.5 percent of the Senate.
- Age: Senate is the 'older' chamber with 12 members (30 percent) over the age of 65; the House has 32.5 percent under the age of 45—including Scott Surovell (D-Mount Vernon) and David Englin (D-Alexandria)
- Race: In the Senate, five members (12.5 percent) are African-American; the rest are Caucasian.
- Length of Service: With 48 members, nearly half of the House has four years or less of experience in the chamber.
- Region: The Northern Virginia region dominates both chambers with 11 members (27.5 percent) in the Senate and 29 members (29 percent) in the House.
- Birth State: In addition to being split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, the Senate is also 50/50 when it comes to Virginia-born legislators and those born outside of the Commonwealth. Two Senators, Don McEachin (D-Richmond) and Frank Wagner (R-Virginia Beach), were born in Europe—Germany and England, respectively.
- Margin of Victory: 63 delegates were elected in uncontested races in 2011.
- Attorneys: Just over a quarter of Delegates and a third of Senators are attorneys.
- Level of Education: 10 percent of legislators in both chambers have a high school education or less.
- Undergrad—Public/Private: 58 members of the House went to state universities.
- Military: Including Del. Englin, 24 House members are veterans.
