The Mount Vernon Estate and Black Women United for Action will remember the slaves who lived at Mount Vernon with a program and wreath laying ceremony Saturday at the Slave Memorial.

This event will feature readings, performances and music acknowledging the slaves’ sacrifices and contributions to the early formation of this nation.  

The Slave Memorial at Mount Vernon was designed by Howard University architectural school students. It was dedicated and opened to the public on Sept. 21, 1983. A gray truncated granite column representing “life unfinished” is the center of three brick circles.

“The three steps leading up to the column are inscribed, respectively, ‘Faith,’ ‘Hope’ and ‘Love,’ the virtues that sustained those living in bondage,” according to a statement sent by the Estate.

The wreath laying ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday. This event is included in regular Estate admission. Admission is free for Black Women United for Action members and their guests.
