Mount Vernon Celebrates Homecoming

Ricky West and Jacqueline Sorto crowned king and queen, Majors grab season-ending 46-21 win

Mount Vernon filled its bleachers Friday night for a shot at the playoffs and an event-filled homecoming. The Majors defeated Wakefield 46-21, but needed McLean to lose in order to clinch a second straight playoff berth. Although McLean won, the Majors ended the season on a positive note, snapping a three-game losing streak and finishing .500.

The football game was not the only attraction to draw fans to Mount Vernon’s campus. School groups and sports teams used the evening to fundraise and raise awareness and support.

“This is the second game that we’ve come out and done this. We do these fundraisers to raise money for the team, but it also helps us get out a little bit in the community so that the community knows us,” said boys’ soccer head coach Robert Garza.

Members of the boys’ soccer varsity team sold dozens of boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts to students, parents and teachers throughout the evening. Aided by the evening’s temperature drop, the Academic Boosters Group, which fundraises for classroom supplies, quickly sold out of hand warmers.

As the Majors held a 25-0 halftime lead, members of the homecoming court took the field for introductions and the announcement of this year’s king and queen. Jacqueline Sorto and Ricky West took the honors. West captains the Major track team and placed second in the National District in the 400 meter dash last season.

“It means a lot. It’s my senior year and I’m graduating and it’s just fun seeing all of my friends smiling, happy and just enjoying this memorable moment,” said West, who was escorted by his grandmother, Patricia Atkins.

Sorto is the the school's senior vice president and a member of the National Honor Society.

“School has been great and I hope to do a lot in the future. I’m really excited to start a new chapter in my life,” said Sorto, who was escorted by her mother, Amanda Sorto.

“I was really excited that I won queen. I didn’t really expect it, but it was pretty cool.”

The Marching Majors and cheerleading squad also enjoyed their last game of the season, delighted to perform in front of Mount Vernon’s largest home crowd this year.
