IMHO

No Thanks!

This Mount Vernon resident isn't thankful for these things.

Last week, I took time to publicly thank a variety of people and causes that have made Mount Vernon such a great community.  Well, Thanksgiving is now over, I’m five pounds heavier and am getting ready for the deluge of Christmas advertising.  So, I’m in a bad mood, which means it’s time to reverse the tables and talk about some things that I do NOT give thanks for:

Those television ads showing a young man giving his young bride a freaking LEXUS for Christmas! Can we just get a little real here, folks?

You’re driving west on Boswell Avenue headed towards Route One and there are two lanes. BOTH of those lanes are used by people who are going straight into the Mount Vernon Plaza shopping center so BOTH of those lanes are bottled up by one car in each lane. Why can’t VDOT make the right hand lane a right hand turn only so we can get that traffic moving?  If they can’t do that, why don’t people think for one minute and go into the left lane if they are going straight so those ten cars behind them can make a right on red?

Fine those candidates whose political signs are still out there!  Leaf blowers going all day long the day after Thanksgiving.  Why can’t we get a dog park at Westgrove?  While I’m at it, we also need a movie theater (please don’t tell me the Hoffman Theater suffices), a good Greek diner, a good bookstore (Books a Million in Pen Daw does not count either) and more new stores to complement the new Home Goods.

Pooh on the people who drive into a left hand turn lane at an intersection when the lights are green and just sit there instead of inching out into the middle of the to an intersection and making the left hand turn when the lights turn yellow or red. You’re allowed to do it, folks! Move your butts!

Pooh on the owners of that piece of property that has the unbelievably ugly red television repair shop as you are heading south from Beacon Hill on Route One. A true “gateway” to Mount Vernon, huh?

Shame on the lack of progress on the North Hill project, the people who continue to say that the county will place more “trailers” on the property and those who continue to ignore that two thirds of that now unusable and dangerous property will be converted to a public park.

I’ll stop there. Don’t even get me started on those who oppose cell phone towers!

About this column: IMHO, or, In My Humble Opinion, is a column where I do just that - express my opinion.

Wow, sounds like someone lost pulling the wishbone on Turkey Day! Ron, I agree with some of your “no thanks”, but not with you on turn lanes. I’m one of those drivers who doesn’t “creep out” into the intersection waiting to turn left when the light changes. The white line is there for a purpose --- going beyond it and stopping is the same as “stopping in the box”. It’s dangerous because you are just sitting out there “unprotected” by a median. What if drivers in both directions did it at the same time? Sitting there hinders emergency vehicles from entering the intersection -- not a good idea. I know you “former New Yawkers” are always in a hurry, but let’s not do anything to compromise safety.

Regarding the right turn only lane on Boswell, it might lessen the bottleneck. This has been a problem from the day Walgreens starting building there. VDOT and County staff should have required Walgreens to give-up some of their property for an additional right hand only turn lane. It’s water over the dam now, but the MVCCA (Transportation and Planning & Zoning Committees) should have raised this issue with Walgreens’ development plans. However, your “fix” might create another bottleneck. Folks turning left will likely back up folks going straight into the shopping center especially when Rte 1 south is gridlocked. I use the left lane, except when I need to make the immediate right hand turn onto Fordson Lane after crossing Rte 1.

C'mon, Greg, where are your cajones??? Next time you're at one of those intersections watch when someone goes into the middle. It's really not dangerous and it gets a few of us through another traffic light cycle so we can get home in time to watch the Yankee game!! As for the right hand turn, I recall that there WERE discussions with Walgreens and maybe VDOT about making it a right hand turn lane. But no one ever followed up....

To be honest, Dave, I felt it would clever of me to come up with the anti-Thanksgiving column but I did struggle with making my list cause things actually are not too bad around here! But I did forget to mention those fortune tellers along Route One!

You want a dog park, movie theater, Greek Diner and bookstore...what's stopping you. Open one. Open all four. This is America. You're allowed. Buy the ugly red TV repair shop and decorate it the way you want it. Or do you just like to complain ...."they should do it".

I dont "like" to complain, Chris. If you read last week's column you would see that I am also ready to compliment folks. As for my just "doing it," well, the county has to approve the dog park. I couldn't just set up a dog park. As for the other items, I do not have the money to open up a movie theater, et al but if you're willing to finance me I think we could make big bucks. Convincing a developer or someone else to put these things up is up to our elected officials, the SFDC, the Chamber, the county EDA office, etc. So, while I agree that this is "America", as you so rightly pointed out, it's not always that easy my friend. Indeed, you ever try to get something as "simple" as a speed bump put onto your street? Nothing is simple. eplm

I hear ya Ron...I am simply killing time. I get the "anti-thanks" theme, and don't see you as a complainer.
So I guess the answer is "yeah, THEY ought to do it, just not me. It isn't easy.". Of course it isn't easy or simple. Who said it was, or even that it should be? The county has to approve a dog park...they have to approve MOST things. You don't have the money for movie theater financing...put together a pitch, a business plan, etc and go get the financing you need. It happens every day by those motivated to do something rather than, nothing. In short, I am pretty clear on how easy or hard taking action is. I am also pretty clear on how much Americans are taking to pointing at the other guy with expectations that HE get it done. It's too hard for me, but complaining, well, that's simply as easy as inhaling and exhaling.
Have a great one, Ron. NO offense intended toward you...simply riffing off your blog.

What about Primo's for your greek diner? It's not exactly a NJ style diner, but lots of good food there...

Primo's is good, Mark, but it's not like Lee's Diner up in West Islip, NY where you can go in at 3:00 a.m. and order some bacon and eggs. And they dont have those amazing cake displays as , no chocolate egg creams, no sassy waitresses that call you "honey."

Ron, you live in NORTHERN VIRGINIA, not New York. Although I agree that in NYC you can find any kind of food at any time of the day or night it you walk a block. Can't wait to go back in 2 weeks.

Ron - - I agree with Dave . . . . ! ! ! !
Surprised you didn't include 'speed bumps' on your 'No Thanks' list! What an incredible waste - - as if they really make a difference. Those folks who are in a hurry just brake briefly for the bump and then 'Gun It' to the next one. In the mean time we all pay the price in decreased fuel efficiency, premature brake repairs and added wear and tear on suspension & steering. Perhaps the county could at least get them installed for free . . . ??
Can't you picture it - - block letters painted on the top of each one! This BUMP brought to you by MEINEKE! - - This BUMP brought to you by MERCHANTS TIRE & AUTO REPAIR! - - This BUMP brought to you by STEVEN'S AUTO CLINIC!

totally agree, Keith. I hate speed bumps and think they are a waste of money. But I think the state has put a moratorium on them because they've run out of money.

Here are my NO THANKS!!:
1. Speed traps on Old Mill Road. I pay you to fight crime, not be revenuers
2. To any new businesses on Route 1 until we deal with the one's we already have. For example: Advanced Auto Parts. How many Auto Parts Stores do we really need in a 5 mile stretch?
3. To ALL the NIMBY's out there who refuse cellphone towers. Bunch of bozos.
4. To the building of homes on every square inch of greenspace we have in MV.
5. To the opening of any more restaurants until we get a decent steak house around here. Note to Ron: GREEK!!??? You couldn't come up with anything better than GREEK!!??
6. To all those Realtors out there with their face plastered on the side of a truck. Good God, I wonder how much they had to drop in Botox to make that picture look good.
7. To everyone who talks and texts on a cellphone while driving. Get a life before you kill someone you inconsiderate dolts.Add to that those who talk on phones while in line, walking down aisles of stores, etc. When I shoulder block you into the ground maybe you'll learn a little courtesy. And what the hell makes you think anyone on earth cares about your menstrual cycle (happened to me in Safeway yesterday)!!
8. To the FCPS: I pay you to teach my kids, not be a parent. Take your surveys, studies, tests, etc. and stick them.
I feel so much better now. Thanks Ron for another interesting article.

Nah, Dave - - I just use an old photo. Sounds like a Realtor who is envious of my Community Service Truck which is always available FREE to schools, churches, charities, and other non-profits on a first come - first served basis.

Speeding is a crime - it's breaking the law. It also kills people. May you never have a friend die or be seriously injured because someone was speeding - even by 5 mph. It's a pain that does not go away.

Dave, I'm not a complainer but if I was, I would agree. But for the record, never had Botox, never will and will NEVER have my face plastered on the side of a truck. I promise! ;-)

Have a better day, everyone - the holiday season of giving has arrived!

Rachel, you could alway buy and provide a Community Service Truck and provide it FREE to charities, churches, schools, etc. and NOT plaster your face on it. But that would be a shame - your face is much prettier than mine!

4th paragraph, 2nd sentence: should be "complement" unless you want the new stores to say nice things about the HomeGoods store :)

I gotta say, Tom, that I absolutely hate it when someone points out a typo AFTER the piece is published! It drives me crazy! But thanks anyway. And, yes, where is my high priced, award winning editor on this one!!! Still, I can take comfort seeing that, despite errors like this one, I continue to get complements for my columns...

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your insightful comments on this week's column! Though I would like to add, as a native New Yorker, I too would love a good 24-hour Greek diner that serves pancakes at 2 a.m. Though Bob and Edith's in Arlington is a good substitute for now... And what's with the lack of good pizza and bagels!

Okay, I'll step off my editorial soapbox for now.

Yeah! Jessie knows what I'm talking about. And if the diner was full, we'd just go down to Jack in the Box... Meanwhile, my wife recently went to Bob and Edith's and she said it was terrible. Hmmm, maybe I should start hitting restaurants and writing some kind of reviews?

Jeri - - I think maybe you need a hug!!! If you take the time to reread the posts I think you'll understand that no one in this string of posts has advocated speeding. The suggestion is not to get rid of speed bumps so anyone can speed. The point is that they are basically ineffective for those who are inclined to speed anyway - - it just causes them to speed *between* the bumps. Aside from being ineffective they are wasteful - - certainly not *green*. They tend to be on streets where the speed limit is 25 mph but the signs recommend slowing to 15 mph to safely cross the bump. This means constant accelerating/decelerating/accelerating/decelerating which anyone understands is not an economical use of fuel and decreases MPG. The bumps also cause undue wear and tear on your car. I hope that helps you understand the post.

Jeri, please contact me as soon as possible. I think I found your sense of humor. And, yes, Jeri, I have had a friend killed by speeding (they were going 90 in a 65) so I understand that quite well. I have also had friends murdered and killed in a robbery. My feelings on speed traps and speed bumps is well documented so I won't re-hash it.

Well Jerir, I give you credit for noting that thhat sentence doesn't have anything to do directly with speed bumps but if you would be so kind please explain to me exactly how that comment advocates speeding. I agree with Dave, when considering the other issues the Route 1 area police force has to deal with it was a waste of resources when 2-4 officers were tied up at the same speed trap 3 - 4 days per week.
