Patch Picks: Non Profits

We are lucky to have so many great nonprofits in the Mount Vernon area helping those in need through various programs. Here are our picks for the five best local nonprofits:

Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services was founded in 1974 and is located in the heart of Mount Vernon. Its mission is to “reduce homelessless, increase community support, and promote self-sufficiency.” serves the Mount Vernon and Lee Districts and operates 70 housing units. GSH offers services such as financial planning, emergency funding for rent or utilities, and an affordable housing locator.

New Hope Housing: Founded in 1977 by a group of citizens concerned about the influx of homeless families and singles living in crime-ridden motels and outdoors, has grown exponentially and now offers shelters, transitional housing, and support services for homeless families and singles throughout Fairfax County. 

Progreso Hispano: Cristina Schoendorf and her team of dedicated volunteers are on a mission: to help improve the quality of life of immigrants and their families. helps immigrants assimilate into their communities via ESL training, translation services, and even helping them obtain U.S. citizenship.

United Community Ministries helps low-income families and singles through various programs including job training, child care, and a food pantry. Most notably, its Workforce Development Center provides training to help clients advance in the workforce, including a micro enterprise workshop that teaches basic business principles.

VIC-HOP: A group of dedicated volunteers and local churches have joined forces to help reduce the number of hypothermia-related deaths among the homeless population.   The helps the local homeless population by giving them a place to sleep during the cold winter months.
