Pedestrian Killed on Fairfax County Parkway Sunday Night
The incident occurred at the Fairfax County Parkway going south at Ehlers Road.
A 57-year-old man was struck by a car and killed on Sunday night near Fort Belvoir. The victim was struck by a 1997 Ford pick-up truck at around 11:20 p.m. in an unlit section of the Fairfax County Parkway going south near Ehlers Road.
"He was standing in the roadway. We don't know why," said Fairfax County Police spokesperson Lucy Caldwell. "The driver saw the person standing there, he braked but it was too late."
The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver was not charged and it does not appear that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The victim's name has been withheld pending next of kin notification.
The incident is still under investigation by Fairfax County Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.

There is a path along the North bound side of the parkway in that stretch. It is even offset from the traffic lanes by a guard rail. The whole corridor from I95 to route 1 and the along Rt. 1 headed north is a confusing area to navigate by foot and bike. I hope that changes with the proposed widening project in that area.
