Though the Majors fought a tough battle Thursday in their season opener against the West Potomac Wolverines, they weren't able to hold their ground.
The Majors trailed 34-7 against the Wolverines, who won the Battle of the Highway football game.
Mount Vernon head coach Barry Wells said the Majors were competitive early in the game, but made some mistakes that cost them the game, including not putting game captain Robert DeCardi-Nelson in at the beginning of the game.
"It's clear he's demonstrated he can be a weapon for us," Wells said.
Wells is optimistic the Majors can be ready for their next game against Marshall next Friday.
"We're going back to the drawing board," he said "I don't think we were in the best physical condition. We're in week one, so all those mistakes can be corrected."
The Majors will face Marshall High School at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Jeff Todd Field.
