Prominent Mount Vernon Businessman Jeff Todd Dies in Car Accident

Todd was a passenger in a car accident in North Carolina.

Prominent Mount Vernon businessman, philanthropist and community leader Jeffrey M. Todd died just after midnight Sunday morning in a car accident in Currituck County, N.C., 40.3 miles north of Kitty Hawk, according to North Carolina State Police. The area is near beaches popular during the summer.

A passenger in the car, Jeff Todd was traveling southbound on North Carolina state Highway 168. The driver swerved to avoid hitting another car. The car then left the roadway and flipped over in a cornfield. Todd was ejected from the vehicle, state police said. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, police said. Information about any other injuries was not readily available.

Todd leaves behind his family: Wife Becky, teenage daughter Kimberly and Hannah, a student at Washington Mill Elementary School. Todd also had a brother, James, of Dumfries and a sister, Judi Todd Darnell of Alexandria.

Todd had recently served as chairman of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of several non-profit organizations. The recipient of the 2010 Chamber Citizen Award, Todd was honored in December at the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Holiday Business Awards Celebration.

Todd was head of Todd Restaurants, Inc., a franchisee of three local Roy Rogers Family Restaurants in the Mount Vernon and Lee areas, with locations in Belle View, Manchester Lakes and Woodlawn. The company was started by his father Jim Todd, a longtime executive with Marriott, who died last August.

Jeff Todd said in an interview with Patch in December that it was the most matter-of-fact thing in the world to give back to the community that gave so much to his family.

"The community has supported us over the last 24-and-a-half years and we just think it is our civic duty to support the community back," Todd said at the time.

Todd said as a kid, he was a "restaurant brat," meaning he and his family moved a lot to accommodate his father's job with Marriott.  After graduating from high school in Williamsburg, he studied at the University of Connecticut.

While he may have sampled a lot of different cities and regions growing up, Todd made Northern Virginia his home for the last 25 years.

Todd was chairman of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of several non-profit organizations including the Mount Vernon-Lee Education PartnershipGood Shepherd Housing and Family Services and United Community Ministries.

Each year, Todd's Roy Rogers Restaurants provide free meals to volunteers for the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce Annual U.S. 1 Highway Cleanup.

Last year, Todd was honored with the Corporate Citizen Award by United Community Ministries for his efforts to support the needy in the Mount Vernon community.

Todd was a dedicated supporter of Mount Vernon High School athletics, sponsoring the Roy Rogers Bowl annually, announcing basketball games, participating in the Mount Vernon Men of Vision and Purpose Program (The MVP Program) supporting at-risk students, and helping other school programs.

When Todd was first approached about taking the reins at the Chamber, he told Patch he begged them to find someone else.

"I'm just a burger guy, I don't view myself any different than the guy making chicken in the back," Todd said.

He told Patch the experience was very humbling and he worried a lot about doing a good job.

"In my head I really just want to be perfect and every single day I'm usually disappointed, but that doesn't stop me from trying," Todd said.

Todd said he liked living in Mount Vernon because of its hometown feel, but he also made the point that there is a lot of need in Mount Vernon.  He said once he wrapped up his stint at the Chamber, he wanted to work on recruiting community volunteers.

Todd was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway.

Patch will post details of upcoming services as news becomes available.

I am absolutely saddened to hear that Jeff has died, I am at a complete loss for words. He was one of our biggest supporters here at the hotel even before we opened and provided continued support over the last 2 years. He will be terribly missed. For Becky, Kimberly and Hannah: I don't have to tell you how wonderful of a man your husband and daddy were to you, he will continue to watch over you all and will always live in your heart.

Jeff Todd was a great guy. There are not enough words to describe how much he cared about the community, the people, his family, and his friends. I have worked closely with Jeff in the last few years as part of the Mount Vernon District Police Station. We are going to miss you.

Jeff was an amazing man, husband and father. He took my stained glass class a few years ago and became quite a skilled glass artist. I will miss seeing him around the community and will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers. Jeff was an amazing multi-tasker for our Mount Vernon community, and his leadership and hard work will be missed. He was one of the good guys with much left to do. God bless the Todd family.

We first met Jeff when he came with Kim and Hannah on a Christmas Eve spreading Christmas Wishes to the neighbors. From then on everywhere we went, Jeff was present. Mt. Vernon High School, the Non-Profits, Good Shepherd Church, the Business Community, the Entire community. His goal was outreach to anyone in need. Just discovered this quote from a ceremony dedicating an Iron Cross at a soldier's grave. "Nothing is ended until it is forgotten." We will not forget Jeff's generosity and will do our best to be a support for Becky and the girls. The Cotters

Jeff and his Dad were the most community-oriented business people I have ever known. Any organization takes on the personality of the person at the top, and our three Roy Roger’s restaurants certainly reflect Jeff’s personality, leadership style, managerial skill, loyalty to both his employees and to South Fairfax County. In an industry known for high turnover, Jeff’s managers and employees stayed with him for years, even decades. Jeff totally integrated Roy Rogers into Lee and Mt. Vernon. While Jeff was known for raising money for worthwhile causes, I will remember him for hiring our disabled neighbors and giving them a chance to contribute. We all have to step it up a notch now. What a Loss to our community! Jeff's spirit and love for people was a true blessing. My son Julien learned so much from Mr. Todd and realized what the definition of giving back truly meant. In the past few years that our family has known Jeff, Becky, Kimberly and Hannah , we always felt as though they were close friends of many years. Their genuine passion for life and sharing life is irreplaceable... Jeff will be deeply missed ! Our thoughts an prayers are with his dear wife and family at this time... Those who knew Jeff would know that he would want nothing more than for us to continue paying it forward... He once told me that , "There is nothing to thank... It is simply what we do". We cannot express in words how devastating this is to hear. Erin and I want to express our sympathy, first to Becky and his daughters, Kimberly and Hannah, and also to his brother Jim and sister Judy. We are so sorry for your loss.
Jeff was an accomplished man, yet humble. He always put the concerns of others first. His sense of generosity and leadership was a true example for our community, as he touched so many lives. He will truly be missed by all.
We pray for strength and endurance through this difficult time and ask that God bless Jeff’s family and friends with grace, mercy and understanding.

I knew Jeff through Mt. Vernon Country Club. He was a joy to play golf with and added a warm presence in the club house. It was always fun to play hole # 12 (he lived off the 12th fairway) and point out to guests the creative lawn art Jeff displayed just off the course. On behalf of my family, I want to express our deep sympathies to Jeff's wife and two daughters. Jeff will be dearly missed at MVCC, I will always be grateful that I could call him a friend.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Jeff Todd, who truly, truly was a pillar of the greater Alexandria community.

Jeff shared with all a great sense of pride in being humble, yet had a very unique and special human spirit of joy and passion for everything he was involved with. Jeff was always a very loyal supporter of both Bucknell and Alexandria Potomac Little Leagues when I was president, helping out with fundraising for our organization in every way he could, which, in turn, was a great 'win-win' for both him and our children.

I would like to very sincerely propose that the small 60' foot baseball/softball field at Belleview Elementary School, on Fort Hunt Road, not too far from his Roy Rogers Restaurant in the Belle View Shopping Center, be named after Jeff in honor of all that he did for youth sports in our community. It would be a fitting tribute to a man who did so much, but in return asked for so little in recognition. More of us, truly, should be more like Jeff, as he helped so many people for so many years.

May God bless Jeff and his family of Becky, Kimberly and Hannah in their time of great loss and sadness.

Here's Jeff's acceptance speech as he become president of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce in 2009: http://www.mtvernon-leechamber.org/toddinstallation.html. Jeff's words, spoken then, should be remembered by all today.

God bless Jeff Todd.

I may not have known Jeff as well as many other people in the Mt Vernon area, but what I did know is he made me a stranger feel as if I had known him all my life and that he was my dear friend, and only a very unique person can do that, our community has lost a great figure a rule model I am sad for all those that will never know him.

I had the pleasure of knowing "Mr. Todd" as we all called him for a short time; however he had one of those personalities that made you feel as if you had known him forever. He announced the girls basketball games(which my daughter is a member of) like no one I've known. He announced each name and statistic with such excitement. His daughter Kimberly attends MVHS and he was not only an active parent but Mount Veron High School's biggest supporter. He will be missed. God Bless his family at this time of sorrow. What a lovely man I got the honor to meet. Mr Todd and I met at my husbands award and trophy shop (Dicks trophies and awards). I used to bring my boys up there when I would work. Mr Todd came to the back to see our boys and we had a wonderful visit. We chatted like we had known each other our whole lives. He told me about his Roy Rogers restaurants and I told him Roys was my first job. We had so much in common. He seemed like one of the most genuine people I have ever met. His presence was very soothing. I was actually sad when he left I enjoyed talking to him so much. He had such an impact on us in that short period of time. What a huge pillar to the community. I was so saddend to hear of this loss. This is just devastating. God bless his family. He truly was an angel.

I was a regular for many years at the Belleview Roy Rogers, when I lived right across the street. The Todd family made it a very welcoming place and it became a home away from home for many people. The kid-friendly atmosphere (I can't tell you how many times I've seen the Lion King video, while I ate dinner there), the thank you notes from visiting classes, the elementary school family nights, and the donation boxes for hospice at the cash registers always gave the place a special atmosphere, not something that can be said of most fast-food establishments. Thank you, Mr. Todd, for creating something special, for giving back to this community, and for giving a work-obsessed single a place to do evening and weekend work in a place that felt was alive with families, so I didn't feel so alone. May you rest in peace now and your family take comfort in all the good you did.

From Rick Genuario:

As my family was laying my mother to rest in Arlington Cemetery on Monday, I learned of the terrible news of Jeff's death. It made a sad day that much more difficult. I cannot think of a better example of a person living his faith through his business and community involvement. I have known Jeff and his family for many years through the Mt. Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, community organizations and Mt. Vernon Country Club. Jeff was so humble and often self-deprecating in deflecting attention from his contributions to his community. He often would tell me that I inspired him and he wanted to be "just like Rick Genuario". I, in turn, would make a point of receiving the weekly bulletin or mass pamphlet at Sunday 9 o'clock mass from Jeff, telling him that I felt more holy if they came from him. Jokes aside, all of us knew how Jeff inspired everyone he met. Our faith teaches us to be charitable, and he was. I pray that despite their intense grief, in time his family will be comforted in knowing what a great man he was.

With Sincere Respect,

Rick Genuario
