Hundreds of residents lined up Friday to get free vegetables.
Hundreds of area residents braved the heat Friday to wait in line for free produce at Rising Hope United Methodist Church.
Rising Hope hosted the free produce giveaway in conjunction with the Capital Area Food Bank. The Capital Area Food Bank truck brought in 6,000 pounds of cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and watermelon for residents.
"Our hope is if it goes well, we'll do this once a month," said seminary intern Drew Colby, one of the giveaway organizers.
"There's all kinds of free produce for people who can't go get them on Richmond Highway," said Carol Murphy, Rising Hope member and volunteer. "This is God's work."

There seemed to be a whole lot of "well-to-do" people in that line. What's up with that, Rising Hope?

Hi Johnson,
Rising Hope said the produce giveaway is open to all. From an email sent by Drew Colby announcing the event: "Our dream is that this will be an opportunity for churches, neighbors, those in need, and those who would just enjoy some free vegetables to come and partake in a celebration of 'God's Bounty.' You cannot always judge a person's means by how they look. You'd be surprised at the dignity of some of the most financially needy people as well as being surprised at the financial resources of some of the most destitute looking. I learned a long time ago you cannot judge a book by its cover. At Rising Hope those with and those without work side-by-side in creating the kind of community where we all help each other.
