Visions for Vacancies: Bottom Dollar Food

What would you like to see in this vacant storefront on Route 1?

This storefront previously occupied by Bottom Dollar Food is located in the Woodlawn shopping center at 8750 Richmond Highway.

The large retail space is located across the street from the Cooper Square shopping center. The Woodlawn shopping center also includes a Wendy's, Bel Art Framing, and a shoe repair store

Bottom Dollar closed earlier this year as part of Delhaize America's decision to close six underperforming Bottom Dollar locations. There are no plans for the vacant storefront at this time as Delhaize America still has seven years left on the lease, said David Versel, Executive Director of the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation.

Delhaize America runs several grocery store chains in North America, including Food Lion, Bloom and Sweetbay Supermarkets.

So, what would you like to see occupy this storefront? Is there a type of business you think our community needs?

i would like to see the store eventually torn down and in its place a mixed use of apartments, small retail, and office space. Greater density and walkability.

haha bookstore... yeah right guys. a discount grocery store can't even stay in business there and you think a book store is gonna stay open for more than two weeks?

Half the people in the neighborhood can't read (English, that is). Why a bookstore? Everyone's online or on Kindle Fires now anyway.

I agree that a bookstore couldn't make it, but it has nothing to do with what language people in the Mount Vernon area and beyond speak. (Note: Books are publish in many languages, not just English.)

Mid-range restaurant that isn't already available on Beacon Hill. Maybe an Olive Garden?

Great idea! My wife and I love Olive Garden, but have to think twice about traveling to the nearest restaurant in the midst of Bailey's Crossroads traffic.

I vote for a sporting goods store. There's not a decent one for miles that carry things like camping gear, kayaks, golfing and fishing equipment. Certainly not a book store! That would be like opening an old-time blacksmith shop!

There's a nice used bookstore across the street called rereads!

I think a building where you can come and do arts and crafts or neighborhood theater, or dance studio. Where you Learn Dance- Like Dancing with the Stars and events could be put on. Helen

I would like to see what is going on and how we can improve our area and make it fun and inviting.

Would love to see an Amish market, like the ones in Upper Marlboro or Annapolis. The area needs something unique, that would we be a destination for people not living in the immediate area, rather than another chain store or restaurant

A destination location won't work if people have to navigate US1 to get there, unfortunately.

A decent gym! In a perfect world it would be an American Family Fitness

Thanks for all your suggestions, everyone! You've got a lot of great ideas (I would love a sporting goods store on Route 1 as well!) Keep 'em coming!

Sporting-goods store - with an indoor shooting range. The replacement for Shooters' Paradise in Marumsco Plaza will likely not ever come to fruition in PWC now that the special-use permit has (presumably) expired.

I run a bookstore on Cooper Rd for any who be happy with a used bookstore--It's reReads and is next to the Burke and Herbert. --Beth

There are plenty of grocery stores in the area with Costco and Weigman's coming to Alexandria. I think the Sporting Goods store is good but also more community center space.....i.e. expanding the Sacremento Center.

How about a Trader's Joe's (great for the singles' & a hardware store like Fischer Hardware in Springfield. Bet they would be considered too "Upscale" for this location. When they changed Food Lion to Bottom Dollar at this location and put a Bloom in Lorton I was ticked and wrote to the company how there decision was made based on profiling each neighborhood. I never heard back from them.

I'm in favor of splitting up the space into a Trader Joe's, an Apple Store, a Sweetwater Tavern (http://www.greatamericanrestaurants.com/gar/), and/or a Micro Center. As a whole I feel like the opening of a GAR restaurant along Route 1 would be a nice improvement the area.

Agree Mike. Something like a Carlyle (Shirlington) or a Mike's American Grill (Springfield) would be a great addition to the area. And a Best Buns bakery next door would be welcome, too. I love all of the GAR establishments.

Trader Joes, or if the space is big enough, Kohls.

Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Big Lots, or a Ross clothes store would be nice.

I agree with Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's would be very nice. It would bring more business to the area. Better grocery stores are needed in that area!

A few weeks ago I heard a rumor that Harris Teeter will be taking over the former Bottom Dollar space. So far I haven't been able to confirm this.
