Visions for Vacancies: Cycle Sport
What would you like to see in this vacant storefront on Route 1?
This storefront previously occupied by Cycle Sports is located in the Mount Vernon Crossroads shopping center at 7800 Richmond Highway.
The large retail space is just south of Gold's Gym and across from Gum Springs. Mount Vernon Crossroads also includes a HomeGoods store, Pep Boys and Old Country Buffet (just south of where Cycle Sports was located).
It has been vacant for more than a year. County officials and local business organizations are not aware of any plans for the site.
So, what would you like to see occupy this storefront? Is there a type of business you think our community needs?
Take our poll or tell us in the comments!

Another auto parts store, laundromat, or quick loan business. Maybe a Latin American Grocery or Chicken Place. That entire complex needs to be raised and turned into a mixed use complex.

I'm extremely disappointed Cycle Sport left over lease issues. I'd love to see a motorcycle shop in there. Would be nice if the owner of the complex patched the parking lot, too.....

This might be a good location to have a mini community space that has 2-3 conference rooms and perhaps a small stage. Would be great to allow many types of arts and entertainment acts to perform on the small stage. Both performers and audience would benefit in this safe, indoor space as an alternative to outdoor activities.

Would that be a good location for a transit center on US Route 1?

Just read through the first 4 pages of the comp plan to know what the vision is for the corridor
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpz/comprehensiveplan/area4/mtvernon1.pdf
and ask yourself whether any of the vision is being accomplished.
Completely razing this strip center and many others like it may be the best solution after all. Farther south just north of the Quantico Marine Base a portion of U.S. 1 in Triangle, between Joplin and Brady's Hill roads, is being widened to six lanes as part of a revitalization project in the area. The old, decrepit shopping strips and commercial sites were razed. The $49 million project is scheduled for completion in July. The transportation infrastructure comes first. The mixed use development comes second. While elected officials are touting the new look on Richmond Highway, the requisite transportation infrastructure is seemingly an afterthought.

how about a BOOK store! Rt 1 doesn't have one and I would even be happy with a used book store at this point. Although I completely agree with Martin (gosh, Martin, never thought I would hear those words come out of my mouth! lol) until we decide to raze some of these older strip malls and start from scratch, we are not going to get a higher caliber of businesses, which Rt 1 is ripe for and deserves.

Tonda, there are two bookstores on or near Rt 1 -- Books a Million is in the Penn Daw shopping center, across the sreet from the new-ish WalMart. And Re-Reads is in Pear Tree Village, near the El Paso Mexican restaurant.

... or another nail salon, Dave! Would love to see a GOOD bookstore café type place with events... book signings, readings, guitar playing, etc. I was happy to hear about Re-Reads when it started, but I have yet to go by when it's open... :( Maybe tomorrow when I pick the dog up from the groomer.

Bookstores are dinosaurs. I got it what we need on Route 1 is a high quality strip club. Now that's growth!!

Richmond Highway (Historic Rt. 1) needs a Trader Joes! Another vacancy is in that same strip -- the Recycled Clothing Store is now vacant too.
