Woodlawn Little League Supports Toys for Tots

Community members encouraged to drop toys off at Woodlawn Fields on Saturday, and sign up for early registration.

Woodlawn Little League, a non-profit organization that offers kickball, t-ball and baseball divisions, as well as tournament and instructional opportunities for more than 300 youths each year, is participating in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots campaign this weekend.

Volunteers from the league will be accepting gifts at the Woodlawn ball fields (5321 Pole Road) on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys each year to distribute as Christmas gifts to needy children in Northern Virginia.

A fixture in the Mount Vernon area for more than 45 years, Woodlawn Little League is also kicking off its Spring 2011 registration this weekend. Players are encouraged to register early to take advantage of the early-bird discounted rate, according to Woodlawn Little League Board President Patrick Cooney.

"Our little league is dedicated to building character, courage and loyalty in our local area youth by providing a fun, safe and competitive baseball program," said Cooney. "Participating in the Toys for Tots campaign helps teach our players about giving back. It also is a chance to make the holidays a little brighter for less-fortunate children."

Players who register this month will receive a $10 discount per child. The cost is $100 for the first child, $80 for each additional child. After January 1, 2011, the cost is $110 for the first child, and $90 for each additional child. Kickball, available for children ages three and four, costs $50.50 per child. League officials note that scholarships are available for qualifying households.

Woodlawn's opening day is scheduled for April 9, 2011. For more information, visit www.woodlawnlittleleague.org.
