U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Across Northern Virginia, voters will decide among candidates for the U.S. Senate as well as for the 8th and 11th Congressional districts. If your polling place is holding both a Republican primary and a Democratic primary, you can only vote in one primary. Office will be 15th for Obama campaign in Virginia.
It seems like President Obama isn't taking any chances when it comes to trying to win over Virginia voters in the fall. In what will be the president's 15th campaign office in the Old Dominion for the 2012 presidential election, the Obama campaign will open an office Saturday in Alexandria, according to the Alexandria Democratic Committee. A grand opening is set for Saturday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the office located at 1400 Duke St., at the corner of Duke and West streets, across the street from the original Shiloh Baptist Church. Former DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe, who has hinted at a run for governor, will speak to volunteers and guests at the grand opening, according to the committee website. Who are your neighbors donating to in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia?
A new Washington Post poll Tuesday shows the Virginia Senate race neck and neck, with Tim Kaine and George Allen split down the middle. Each has 46 percent, the same as a year ago, the newspaper noted. Kaine is ahead in fundraising, collecting $7,434,457 to Allen's $6,137,826 as of March 31. Allen is in a primary race with three fellow Republicans, while Kaine has the Democratic field to himself. Allen leads the race in donations from in-state donors, with 47.8 percent of his donations coming from Virginia. Kaine's in-state donations account for 31.3 percent, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. However donations of less than $200 total $421,434 for Kaine and $130,700 for Allen. President Barack Obama seemed to strike all the right notes Friday at Washington-Lee High School when he delivered a speech designed to put pressure on Congress to keep student loan interest rates down. The president spoke before an enthusiastic crowd of more than 1,000 junior and senior high school students, parents, faculty and local elected officials. Nearly 94 percent of Washington-Lee students go on to some sort of higher education upon graduation. Obama spoke briefly about the economy in general before specifically talking about college affordability. J. Patrick Murray's campaign lists almost $30,000 cash on hand; FEC notes debts of $38,000
The campaign of J. Patrick Murray, the sole Republican candidate running against Congressman Jim Moran (D-8th District), is running low on funds, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. An FEC disclosure form states that Murray has: "What you see is long-term debt that is money I loaned to the campaign," Murray told Patch on Monday. "That's my money, largely from the first time I ran. We don't owe anybody anything. We have cash on hand and continue to do more." Murray ran against Moran, an 11-term incumbent, in 2010, taking 37.31 percent of the vote.
