Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Arlington resident Jason Howell has less than $10,000 in the campaign bank and needs 1,000 signatures by June 12 to get on the ballot.
Arlington resident Jason Howell isn't letting incumbent Congressman Jim Moran's sizable war chest of nearly half-a-million dollars get in the way of running for Congress. Howell's got less than $10,000 in the bank for his campaign, so he's hitting every local barbecue, 5k and neighborhood meeting he can to help get the word out. Standing outside the Giant grocery store in Arlington's Cherrydale neighborhood over the weekend, Howell said hello to potential voters in what will likely be an uphill battle to try to unseat Moran, a Democrat who some say is gliding toward his 12th term since getting elected in 1990 to represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District. "My wife and I are doing the lion's share of signature-gathering," Howell said…

Here’s a look at some of the top Patch stories of the past week from across southern Fairfax County and a look at what’s coming up: Cocaine Ring More than two dozen people from Northern Virginia were arrested in connection with a Honduran cocaine ring. According to case documents, those charged — largely Honduran immigrants who have lived in Northern Virginia for the past seven years — hired couriers to smuggle cocaine to the United States, usually through wooden shoes or picture frames. In other crime news, police arrested Gloria Alfreda McMillan and charged her with a felony hit and run that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Shelinda Delores Arrington earlier in May on Harrison Lane in the Groveton area. School Security Cameras The …

A grand opening is set for Saturday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the office located at 1400 Duke St., at the corner of Duke and West streets, across the street from the original Shiloh Baptist Church. Who are your neighbors donating to in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia?
A new Washington Post poll Tuesday shows the Virginia Senate race neck and neck, with Tim Kaine and George Allen split down the middle. Each has 46 percent, the same as a year ago, the newspaper noted. Kaine is ahead in fundraising, collecting $7,434,457 to Allen's $6,137,826 as of March 31. Allen is in a primary race with three fellow Republicans, while Kaine has the Democratic field to himself. Kaine's in-state donations account for 31.3 percent, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. However donations of less than $200 total $421,434 for Kaine and $130,700 for Allen. Del. Scott Surovell raised $30,000 Saturday at event that attracted constituents and fellow Democrats.
Delegate Scott Surovell (D-44) held his third annual “Cinco de Surovell” campaign fundraiser Saturday, celebrating the Cinco de Mayo holiday at Fort Hunt Park. The 50-person party featured Mexican food, Tejano music and beer as well as visits with constituents, colleagues in the General Assembly and members of the Fairfax County School Board. “This is one of the most successful fundraisers I have every year," said Surovell. "We've made about $30,000 today." An attorney, Surovell was elected to Virginia's House of Delegates in 2009, and is the former chair of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee. Guests at Saturday's event included:
Kits mistaken for kittens, SUV assault, Super Moon and more.
Here’s a look at some of the top Patch stories of the past week from across southern Fairfax County and a look at what’s coming up: Those Aren’t Kittens… A Fort Hunt family rescued what they thought were very young kittens from under their backyard shed. When they brought them to a local park on a nice spring day a few weeks later, a park ranger spotted them—and said they weren’t kittens. Find out what they were in the story here. Crime This past week had a lot of police-related news across southern Fairfax County: Monday, a passenger in a taxi from Prince William County overtook the driver, stole the vehicle and crashed it in Lorton. On Friday, 21-year-old Shelinda Arrington was killed in what police believe may have been an assault …
