Senate candidate and former Gov. George Allen stopped by a Fort Belvoir/Mount Vernon food drive over the weekend, to contribute to an effort that netted more than 11,000 pounds of goods for area food banks.
"At our food drive in Fort Belvoir - Mount Vernon we had a special guest — former Gov. George Allen stopped by to make a donation! We were grateful he would take the time to participate in our food drive in his community," said organizer Christina Thomlinson, in an e-mail Sunday.
Allen made the donation at the Mount Vernon Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located on the George Washington Parkway. The Fort Belvoir congregation collected 1,700 pounds of food Saturday there to benefit the Lorton Community Action Center, one of 13 congregations to run a food drive yesterday in Northern Virginia.
On Saturday, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the area in South Arlington and Alexandria took part in the Mid-Atlantic Day to Serve, collecting food at four Giant stores and other locations.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also made a donation to the Capital Area Food Bank in Lorton by a delivery last Thursday of a semi-truck of food from our central storehouse in Salt Lake City, Utah.
