Nonprofits Join Forces for ‘True Reality’ Sleep Out

Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS), Shelter House, Inc. and United Community Ministries (UCM) will host a “True Reality” Sleep Out on Friday night to raise awareness and funds for those who are homeless in Northern Virginia.

The Sleep Out is part of Fannie Mae’s 2012 Help the Homeless program. The event will be staged outdoors at Shelter House’s administrative office in Herndon. Participants will rough it for one night (limiting themselves to four supply items apiece, with only basic resources such as water and restroom facilities being provided) to raise awareness and funds for families in need in Northern Virginia.

“Shelter House launched the True Reality Sleep Out last year to raise awareness about the trauma and uncertainty a homeless family may face," said Kim Kendrick of Leftwich & Ludaway LLC and president of Shelter House’s Board of Directors, in a statement. "The event is not a simulation, but rather an event of dedicated people who are committed to our mission to provide supportive services and promote self-sufficiency for homeless families in Fairfax County. We are so pleased to have NVFS and UCM join us for this important community awareness event."

Representatives of the hosting organizations’ board of directors, donors, volunteers and staff will participate and share a glimpse into the experience throughout the night on Facebook and on Twitter at #nvfs and #ShelterHouseInc.

Individuals can register to participate or make a donation at www.hthwalks.org. Registration fees are $20 for youth (ages 25 and younger), $30 for adults, and $35 for virtual participants. Sponsorships are also available through Fannie Mae, which includes an additional incentive award equal to 20 percent of your contribution for your chosen beneficiary. All donations are tax-deductible, and 100 percent of online registration fees, and any additional donations, go directly to your selected organization.
