Arcadia Farm Director Leaves Woodlawn Plantation for New Position

Farm Director Maureen Moodie has left Arcadia Farm after two and a half years.

Arcadia Farm Director Maureen Moodie has left Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture at Woodlawn Plantation for a new position.

Moodie, whose last day was Saturday, is now managing the vegetable farm at Moutoux Orchards in Loudoun County. Arcadia Farm, located at Woodlawn Plantation at 9000 Richmond Highway in Mount Vernon, consistst of a farm and educational children’s garden providing a model of sustainable agriculture.

Woodlawn is owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

During her tenure at Arcadia, Moodie oversaw all the farm production, planning and programming. She earned her master's degree in Cultural Anthropology, studying small-scale farmers and the local food movement.

“Over the last 2 1/2 years, we have grown thousands of pounds of produce, welcomed hundreds of elementary school children to the farm, and served hundreds of folks with our Mobile Market,” Moodie said in an farewell email sent to Arcadia supporters.

“We have raised money, hired staff, procured tools, launched websites, fought groundhogs, and had spectacular events," she said. "I have watched folks eat my veggies in some of the area’s best restaurants and served friends and supporters right in the field. I am lucky to have been a part of Arcadia from the beginning and I will miss it dearly.”

Arcadia Farm is expected to select a new farmer in the next week.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has been in the news lately after it announced it did not plan to renew the lease for Woodlawn Stables.
