Best of Route 1: Gyms

Tell us where you get your fitness on.

What is the best gym on Route 1? We need your help to find out.

Welcome to our bi-weekly “Best Of Route 1” contest, where Patch asks readers to visit our “Places” section and write their thoughts on which they like best.

You don’t have to be a professional critic. Just write down a few thoughts about what you like (or don’t like) about the featured gym. Your opinion counts!

Here’s how to play:

1. Create a free Patch login if you don’t already have one.

2. Visit the pages in our Places directory. Click on the links to go to the pages. This week’s contenders are:

  • Gold's Gym
  • Tell us which gym you like as a write-in candidate!

3. Write a review at the bottom of the page where prompted. What makes it your favorite gym? Are the spin classes tough? Are there plenty of cardio machines to go around? Votes in the below poll will count as a vote, and reviews on the Places pages will count as two votes. One vote per person in the poll and one review per person on the Places pages, please!

4. The place with the most combined votes and reviews by Wednesday, Jan. 25 will be declared the winner.

5. Check back every two weeks for a new Best of Route 1 category. We’ve got the whole highway covered.

Thanks for playing, and may the best gym win! Now drop and give me 20!

Ugh, a good gym on Route 1 does not exist! What we need is an American Family Fitness to open, like the ones in Fredericksburg and Richmond. Now those are good gyms- open 24 hours, really good classes included, daycare, a pool, racquetball and plenty of new machines. At any gyms in this area (unless you want to pay an arm and a leg- my membership at AFF in Fburg was $75 a month for 2 people), you at most get one or two of those amenities. Perhaps I'm wrong and I'm overlooking some gem? I'd love to be corrected if anyone knows of a place like that!

The Water Aerobics Classes at GW Rec Center are the best in the route 1 area. The prices are economical and the instructor is very good. They also have a tread mill, bike, and ellipitical, free weights and a circuit weight trainer. The people are freindly and the staff is excellent.

I love Anytime Fitness next to Safeway in Engleside Plaza. Once you signup you get a key so you can go workout whenever you want. They also have security cameras inside and out to protect patrons (especially females) during non-staffed hours. They have fitness trainers if you want and otherwise you can just workout however you want whenever you want. It has been very helpful with my hectic lifestyle. Some nights if I can't sleep I will just head over there at 4am. They have a terrific array of equipment and from between $30-$45 a month its definitely affordable!
