1. Occasionally Cake is giving away free cupcakes today to celebrate its two-year anniversary.
2. The Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club is holding a food drive to replenish UCM's Food Pantry this Saturday at the Hollin Hall Safeway.
3. Alexandria residents who are at least 15 years old are invited to capture their best basketball dunk on video and submit it online by August 31 for a contest sponsored by Everfresh Juice.
4. Today is actor Robin Williams's 60th birthday.
5. Ironically, today is the Coldest Day Ever Day because on this day in 1983 the temperature in Vostoke, Antarctica was -128.6 Fahrenheit.
