Children Evacuated from St. Luke's Day School Tuesday After Crane Collapse

Students in classes at St. Luke’s Day School at St. Luke’s Church in Fort Hunt were evacuated and sent home Monday after a crane collapse occurred while workers were attempting to work on a cell phone tower on the church steeple. Two workers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The church re-opened Wednesday afternoon after it was deemed safe to enter by Fairfax County inspectors.

New Parkland Acquired in Mount Vernon District

The Fairfax County Park Authority recently acquired several parcels of parkland with new properties located in Mount Vernon, Braddock, and Springfield districts. John McPherson donated 14 acres within the Paul Springs Stream Valley in the Mount Vernon District; the parcels will increase connectivity within the stream valley park.

Police: Stranger Asks Mount Vernon Student Thursday to Get Into His Car

A 16-year-old Mount Vernon High School student walking to school Thursday morning was reportedly approached by a man who tried to persuade her to enter his vehicle, according to Fairfax County Police. The student walking to school near the intersection of Old Vernon Court and Old Mount Vernon Road near the school when she was approached by an African-American male driving a newer model red Ford Mustang, Fairfax County Police spokesperson Don Gotthardt said. The suspect attempted to persuade the student to get in his car, and she refused. The suspect fled the scene.
