VOICE Calls for Mount Vernon Community to Support Better Parks

Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay will visit local parks on Wednesday to learn more about the needs of Route 1 regarding its high youth, heavily low-income community.

The visit is organized by Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement, (VOICE). McKay will visit local parks and fields including 's practice field and Muddy Hole Park. VOICE is calling on community members, parents, coachesstudents, and athletes to rally at the following locations on Wednesday:

The tour stems from a to push for more investment in youth recreation facilities and access to after-school programs for local youth. At the action, McKay and Lee District Park Authority board member Ed Batten committed to work with VOICE to make improvements at Muddy Hole, MLK, and Mt. Vernon Woods parks and to fund the following priorities in the impending $75 million Fairfax Park Bond: $1.2 million for synthetic turf fields at & high schools; $50,000 to organize a public-private partnership to create a playing field in Audubon, a low-income immigrant community; and planning funding for a low-fee recreation or community center along the Route 1 Corridor.
