Each week in December, Mount Vernon Patch will highlight some of the area's best holiday volunteer opportunities.
New Hope Housing is also accepting donations for their Adopt-A-Family program. If you are interested in adopting a family or a single in the transitional program, please contact Chris Bramante for more information and a wish list. Gifts must be new, and they must be wrapped and labeled when they are dropped off at the administration building. Gifts must be dropped off by December 17. Gift cards to local stores such as Target, Safeway, and Wal-Mart are also being accepted by New Hope Housing. Gift cards may be mailed or dropped off at New Hope's administration building.
United Community Ministries needs volunteers for its Back Porch Thrift Shop. Available shifts are: Monday-Wednesday, Friday-Saturday 10-6; Thursday 10-8; and Sunday 12-6. Holiday help needed! Please contact Christine Fiske at 703-768-7106 x328 to sign up for a shift.
United Community Ministries is in urgent need of non-perishable food items for its food pantry. Items include: baby food, diapers, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, cereal, and small toiletries. Donations can be dropped off at UCM's main office on 7511 Fordson Road, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
The Mount Vernon Unitarian Church is seeking donations for UCM's Giving Tree program. Please bring a new, unwrapped gift to the Commons for donation to UCM's "Santa's Workshop" for the needy in our area. Infant through teen gifts needed. Last day for drop off is Sunday, December 19.
Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is seeking volunteers for its Auxillary program. Volunteers greet patients, work at the gift shop, and help out at the thrift shop on Richmond Highway, among other duties. For more information, please visit their website.
Rising Hope United Methodist Church needs food donations for its holiday gift baskets. Items include: hams, turkeys, and roasting chickens. Donations must be dropped off by December 19 between 1:30-3:00pm. Donations can be dropped off anytime this week, Tuesday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
