Events for the weekend of Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24

Summer officially begins with a weekend full of local events. 

Alexandria Citizens Band Concert

  • Where: Market Square, Alexandria
  • When: Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Why Go: This organization is celebrating 100 years with free summer concerts in front of Alexandria’s City Hall. 
  • Price:  FREE

Cinema Under the Stars

  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton
  • When: Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Why Go: On Friday families will enjoy the 80’s adventure film “The Goonies”.  Saturday night’s special feature is a sing-a-long with the 70’s classic “Grease”.
  • Price: $5 per person; children 6 and under are FREE

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

  • Where: Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Alexandria
  • When: Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23 at 8 p.m.; Sunday, June 24 at 2 p.m. (Additional shows through July 8)
  • Why Go: ACCT presents Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular musical inspired by the biblical tale of Joseph and his famous coat of many colors. 
  • Price: Adults $18; Children and Senior Citizens $15

Del Ray Music Week and Festival

  • Where: Various locations in the Alexandria area
  • When: Through Saturday, June 23
  • Why Go: Del Ray Music Week wraps up with shows at a variety of venues on Friday night.  The Festival takes place on Saturday in the field next to Mount Vernon Recreation Center in Alexandria.  See website for participating bands, showtimes and locations. 
  • Price: FREE

Vietnamese Heritage Festival

  • Where: George Mason University, Parking Lot K, Fairfax
  • When: Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Why Go: Celebrate Vietnamese culture with authentic food, music, dancing and martial arts. The first 100 admissions will receive a free door prize.
  • Price: $7 per person; Children 5 and under are FREE; Admission is FREE for anyone wearing full Vietnamese traditional dress

Skatefest 2012

  • Where: Wakefield Skate Park, Annandale
  • When: Main Event is Saturday, June 23 beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Why Go:  This annual festival raises funds for Children’s Hospital National Medical Center.  Whether as a spectator or participant, be sure to check out this fun event for a worthy cause.
  • Price:  Spectator Admission is FREE; Participant Registration is $30

Clifton Wine Festival

  • Where: Children’s Park, Clifton
  • When: Saturday, June 23 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Why Go:  Enjoy an afternoon of wine sampling, live music, arts and crafts, food, children’s activities and more.
  • Price: Admission is FREE

Alexandria Food and Wine Festival

  • Where: John Carlyle Square, Alexandria
  • When: Saturday, June 23 from Noon – 5 p.m.
  • Why Go: This event will host a variety of local restaurants, wineries and entertainers, as well as fun activities for kids.
  • Price:  Admission is FREE; “Taste Ticket” booklets are $20 for 25 tickets, and Wine Garden entry is $10

Celebrate Summer Block Party

  • Where: Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton
  • When: Saturday, June 23 beginning at 3 p.m.
  • Why Go: Activities to include live music and dancing, art demonstrations, face painting, food vendors and more. 
  • Price: Admission is FREE

Good Ol’ Days Car Show

  • Where: Occoquan Regional Park, Lorton
  • When: Sunday, June 24 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Why Go:  More than 200 vehicles are expected to be on display this Sunday.  Attendees will also enjoy games, raffles, live music, food and more.
  • Price: $3 per person

  • Braddock Nights presents Folsom Prisoners at Lake Accotink Park, Springfield.  Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.  FREE.
  • Mount Vernon Nights presents Nothin’ Fancy at Grist Mill Park, Alexandria.  Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.  FREE.
  • Spotlight by Starlight presents Billy Coulter at Mason District Park, Annandale.  Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.  FREE.
  • Arts in the Parks presents The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra’s OTO String Quartet at Burke Lake Park, Fairfax Station.  Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m.  FREE.
  • Arts in the Parks presents The Great Zucchini Magic Show at Mason District Park, Annandale.  Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m.  FREE.
