Lights, Camera, Action (Day 5 in Tampa)

Evan Draim, 17, is the youngest delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention. This blog details his experiences in Tampa as he seeks to bring a younger perspective to the party.

The presence of hurricane Isaac did not dampen the spirits of Republican activists at the convention...or the energy of the many media outlets here! In fact Monday proved to be my busiest day for media appearances (which may be rivaled by tomorrow's schedule).

Early in the morning I participated on two radio stations broadcast in Virginia: WMAL (6:35 AM) and WRVA (7:35 AM). Although those appearances forced me to wake up at 6:00 AM, I was able to grab a few cups of coffee at a Virginia delegation breakfast hosted by Koch Industries. Tagg Romney, Jon Voight, and Congressman Jason Chaffetz were all featured speakers, demonstrating how critical Virginia is in this upcoming election.

When I stepped out of the breakfast for a minute, I was approached by a swarm of media- most from different outlets. NBC4 needed B-roll for their very impressive segment on me that aired at 5 p.m. that same day. The Washington Examiner, Richmond Times-Dispatch, and Virginia Pilot all conducted interviews with me (two of the aforementioned newspapers actually went up to my hotel room- with my permission- to talk to my dad).

Because there was some confusion getting credentials, Marta Saltus and I were running late for scheduled interviews at the convention center. When we arrived, CNN, Education Week, and Voice of America all had reporters outside the hub waiting to talk to me. It took a scheduling miracle to fit them all in. CNN and Education Week were doing following pieces, so they followed me around to most of the other activities/interviews I had that day. First, in the Times Forum, I interviewed with European Public Broadcasting. Then I returned to the hub and talked to Voice of America and a local CBS affiliate from Richmond.

I forget when during that madness I ate lunch, but Education Week and CNN both tagged along to ask questions while I ate. At 2:30 PM, we walked to POLITICO's studios to conduct a live interview on POLITICO TV. Afterwards when we returned, I was greeted by a reporter from Seventeen, who interviewed me and complimented my Vineyard Vines attire (hopefully she mentions that in the piece so I get free swag from the company).

The final part of the day consisted mainly of radio interviews. I conducted interviews with CBS Radio and French Public Broadcasting. The most interesting exchange of the day occurred when Hungarian Public Broadcasting managed to find me. Talking to the nation where my grandparents grew up had special relevance to me.

After that final media appearance, it was once again time to party. Since Marta Saltus had since left, delegate Erin Smith drove me and alternate delegate Phil Griffin to a party sponsored by the American Conservative Union entitled "Nuestra Noche." The highlight of the party was greeting and taking pictures with Mary Pauline Jones, the birthday girl!

What a wild day! And to think the convention has not even really convened yet...

I figured you'd have some interviews, but this is a lot!

Humble, Evan. Be humble.

Wow 2cents - what is your problem? This young man sounds like he has act together and he's gotten involved in our democratic process which is more than more Americans do. Good for him. As for the private school tuition, perhaps you are unaware that $27K is on the low end. Catholic schools are much less expensive than Sidwell Friends 50K+ where Obama's children go. Ignore morons like 2cents Evan. Keep up the impressive work!
Steve Chaconas August 29, 2012 at 12:49 pm
2cents??? How about non cents! I know Evan and he is an awesome kid, perhaps a role model for yours if you didn't abort them. Your hate comes shining through your penny's worth of thought!

I admire what I have read about Evan's ambition and his drive. Though I do not agree with his politics, I am delighted to see a high school student so engaged in the political process. From the WaPo article, it sounds like he worked very hard to become a delegate and I am glad that he is enjoying the convention.
2cents was out of line here, but I think that Steve Chaconas' remark about abortion was equally out of line.

I signed my name to my comments and stand by them. Anonymous comments are easy to make. Apparently abortion upsets you beyond discussion. A personal attack on a young person of the level of Evan deserved the literary punch!

Evan ran an excellent campaign, well organized and innovative. He deserved to win. (Marta Saltus also ran an aggressive, effective campaign. They are the type people that political parties want to have as candidates and as officials.)
It is likely that Evan has a great future in politics if he wants it. He is a natural leader. He gets along with people and he attracts volunteers easily. Now, when will he be old enough to run for president?
Cathryn S August 30, 2012 at 05:14 pm
Steve, I admire Evan's zeal and drive. I do not share his political view. I thought that the comment made by 2cents was cheap, perhaps in keeping with the nom de plume. I have no problem discussing and even debating the issue of abortion in the appropriate setting . It just has no place in a string of comments that should primarily be focused on a young man's convictions and impressive drive.

At least you're honest, Senator Puller. You voted for the transportation bill to take hard-earnedRead More money from the pockets of your constituents.

Republicans are for a free market system. Abortions on demand are a type of crony capitalism sinceRead More our taxpayer dollars and our individual funding of the exchange are subsidizing the procedure. Paying out of pocket is a free market system. It works for boob jobs, face-lifts and LASIK.
