Our Daily Break collects monetary donations, backpacks, and calculators as part of Fairfax County Public School’s Collect for Kids Back to School program.

The program allows the county in partnership with area nonprofits, for profits, and local governments to purchase school supplies in bulk at $15 per student. It typically costs $40 per student to buy supplies at a retail price, according to the charity.

“It’s a fantastic program, I love the efficiency of it,” said Lisa Whetzel, the charity’s executive director. “Donors really want to donate to programs that stretch their dollar and this does it in a way that’s very efficient.”

Last year, Our Daily Bread collected enough supplies for about 700 students in the Fairfax High School and J.E.B. Stuart High School pyramids. Social workers in the schools match the charities up with the students who need supplies.

In addition to Our Daily Bread, donations can also be made at every Apple Federal Credit Union branch in the county. Collect for Kids also partners with the Lorton Community Action Center, Reston Interfaith, the Salvation Army, and United Community Ministries, among other organizations.
