Mt. Vernon Nursing Center Received 5-Star Rating

Medicare.gov rates Mount Vernon Nursing & Rehab Center with Top Overall Rating

March 13, 2014, Alexandria, VA – The Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (MVNRC) has achieved a 5-star Overall Rating from Medicare.gov, the official U.S. Government site for Medicare. Medicare.gov provides national listings for nursing homes as well as hospitals, doctors, home health facilities and more. The “Nursing Home Compare” feature of the website allows consumers to compare information about nursing homes. It contains quality of care information on every Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing home in the country, including over 15,000 nationwide.

Medicare.gov nursing home ratings are based on 3 areas of measurement: Health Inspections; Staffing and Quality. A star rating from one to five stars, with 5 stars being the top rating, is provided for each of the three measures and these three ratings are then combined to calculate an Overall Rating.

Nursing Home Compare includes information on the following:

• Nursing home staffing information about the number of registered nurses, licensed practical or vocational nurses, physical therapists and nursing assistants in each nursing home.

• A set of quality measures that describe the quality of care in nursing homes including percent of residents with pressure sore, percent of residents with urinary incontinence and more.

• Penalties against a nursing home.

The website also provides quality information about how to choose a nursing home.

“This top tier rating could not have been achieved without the incredible efforts of our staff. While new technologies and efficient operating systems play a large role in today’s skilled nursing center environments, it’s the quality, experience and compassion of the staff that treats patients and residents alike that makes the difference between a good nursing center and a great nursing center! More important is that we haven’t lost sight of what makes MVNRC unique since our opening in 1979: Our ongoing commitment to providing the most compassionate care and attention to our residents and patients”, quoted Robert DeMaria, MVNRC Administrator.

Especially noteworthy in the Medicare.gov ratings for MVNRC are the consistently high ratings for Staffing. MVNRC staff to patient ratios are consistently at a higher rate than averages in the region.  Medicare.gov staff ratings are based on two measures: 1) Registered Nurse (RN) hours per resident day; and 2) total staffing hours per resident day. Total staffing includes: RNs; Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs); and Certified Nurse Aids (CNAs).

MVNRC Marketing and Admissions Director, Eileen Spinella remarked, “It’s generally understood that because nursing home quality of care and services vary greatly, utilizing survey results and ratings like Medicare.gov’s Nursing Home Compare data is an important way to measure nursing home quality.”
