Route 1 Transit Study Moves Forward

Actions have been taken by both Prince William and Fairfax counties to move transit study initiative forward.

In 2011, I introduced and got passed a bill to initiate and fund the Route 1 Transit Study in both Fairfax and Prince William Counties. I am pleased to report that actions have been taken to move this initiative forward. Prince William County will propose a plan for their section of Route 1 and Fairfax Country a proposal for their part of Route 1.

In Fairfax, the Fairfax Department of Transportation is going to perform an alternative analysis study to recommend various ways to assist with transit in this area. They have applied for a $2 million grant from the Federal Transit Authority. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transit has made available $500,000 to assist with the alternative analysis study. Completing this alternative study is key to receiving Federal funding whether it is bus rapid transit, eventually metro, or any other type of transit service.  The Federal Transit Authority should be making its decision whether to grant financial assistance with the transit analysis in July. It will take two years to do the transit analysis in Fairfax.

Congressman Jim Moran was able to obtain $180 million in federal funding to provide congestion relief caused by the new community hospital at Fort Belvoir between Woodlawn Plantation south to Telegraph Road. Now that the hospital is open, there will be many more trips to and from Belvoir by staff and patients going to the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And, in that project they are saving right of way for future transit so it will be ready to hook up with whatever transit is decided on and eventually built.

In other areas along Route 1, the Fairfax Department of Transportation is building shelters for passengers who use the bus or some other type of rapid transit that may come as well as much needed pedestrian improvements. A transit center will also be built on Route 1, but no site has been selected. The Fairfax Department of Transportation has been working with the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC), with County Supervisors Gerry Hyland and Jeff McKay, and others to come up with a site agreed upon by the surrounding communities.

Things are moving forward albeit slowly. The alternative study must be completed to receive federal funding. We are pushing ahead to keep this project going to provide some relief to this long-time congested area.

What sites have been eliminated and which ones are up for review? Are they going to look into putting in another bridge that connects route one with maryland? The distance between the 2 existing bridges is vast and forces people to drive further up and down route one than they otherwise would.

I'm glad they are building shelters for existing bus stops. It has been long needed. They should also put in more sidewalks to the bus stops. There are a few areas where there are no sidewalks near the bus stop, or the sidewalk ends too soon (why does it end too soon? Because there are dirt paths made by people walking to/from the bus stops. If there is a dirt path, it means people walk there often enough to warrant a sidewalk.) It would make it safer for people to walk and it would look better. For examples, look at the bus stop near Napper road and route one, or even the bus stop on Pohick Rd by route one. Additionally, adding trash and recycle bins to bus stops would reduce the amount of stuff that is thrown out onto the street.

Now that it's going to be three lanes from Telegraph Rd. to Woodlawn, the bottle neck will be from Woodlawn to Buckman Rd. When will they finally make Route One three lanes to 495?

whats the over-under for how long this will take (expansion)? I say 15 years.

That's a bit optimistic don't you think Stringer? Moron and Touty will be crowing about how they are proposing and moving initiatives forward for another couple election cycles and of course a redistricting plan will have to be in place to assure them of re-coronation err election.

Less study, more WORK. What else is there to study? Everything is funneled onto Route one. There's no access, east or west, to other major roads between Fairfax County Parkway and 495. This is the root problem, and nothing is being done to alleviate it. The other major problem is all the relocation of jobs from Metro-accessible areas (such as Crystal City) to places with no metro access. The Yellow Line needs to be extended down to (and probably past) Fort Belvoir. Stop studying it, and do something about it.

C- Federal Law does not allow the Federal Highway Administration to approve a new Route 1 design until a transit study has been completed that shows that the mode of transit contemplated is feasible from multiple perspectives - e.g. ridership, engineering, etc. I would like to just start widening Route 1, but it's not that simple. There are many moving pieces and I've written about this several times on my online newsletter such as here: http://scottsurovell.blogspot.com/2011/01/weekly-column-attacking-us-1-gridlock.html I wish we could skip the studies, but that's not legally possible.
