Fire: Leaking Gas Meter Causes $50,000 Damage at Mount Vernon-Area Home

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire Saturday at approximately 11:45 a.m., in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located on Remington Drive.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire on the exterior of the two-story home upon arrival. A neighbor who called 911, unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. 

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and kept the fire from spreading throughout the whole house. The occupants were not home when the fire broke out. The home had working smoke alarms. Both occupants have been displaced. Red Cross support was offered but declined. There were no injuries.

Damage is estimated at $50,000.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. A leaking outside gas meter caused the fire. The ignition source is still under investigation.
