Mount Vernon Residents Donate $39,000 to Presidential Campaigns

Fairfax County residents in Patch coverage area donate more than $1 million.

Mount Vernon residents contributed about $39,000 to presidential campaigns during the 2012 election cycle.

As of Feb. 21, 2012, former Gov. Mitt Romney’s campaign has received the most money from community members in the 22309 ZIP code, with a total of about $22,500, according to information at Opensecrets.org.

President Barack Obama’s campaign had the second-highest amount in contributions, with $9,300 from area residents.

The campaigns to elect U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich’s (R-Georgia) received less than $6,500 each.

Fairfax County residents in Patch's coverage area have donated a total of more than $1.2 million to presidential campaigns.

More than half of those dollars have gone to Romney’s campaign, which has gained a total of more than $780,000 from Fairfax County residents. Obama has received the second-highest number of donations, with more than $620,000.

Gingrich has received more than $75,000 from county residents, while Santorum and Paul have collected less than $30,000 each.

The Virginia Republican Presidential Primary election will be held on Tuesday, March 6, but .

Polls are open between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
