Mount Vernon Lawmakers Head to Richmond

Senator Toddy Puller, Del. Scott Surovell are heading to Richmond for the 2013 session of Virginia's General Assembly.

The Virginia General Assembly will convene at noon Wednesday for its 2013 session.

In odd-numbered years, the General Assembly meets for 30 days, with the option to extend the session for a maximum of another 30 days.

The General Assembly consists of the House of Delegates with 100 members and the Senate with 40 members.  The 140 elected representatives are from an equal number of constituent districts across the commonwealth.

Mount Vernon's representatives are:

Virginia Senate 2013

Senator Linda "Toddy" Puller

Member since 2000
Democrat
District 36: Includes parts of Fairfax, Prince William, and Stafford counties.

Senator Adam Ebbin

Member since 2012

District 30: Includes parts of Fairfax County, Arlington County, and the City of Alexandria.

Virginia House of Delegates 2013

Delegate Scott Surovell

District 44: Part of Fairfax County including Hayfield, Mount Vernon, and Groveton.

The House of Delegates is presided over by the Speaker of the House.

The Senate is presided over by the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, currently Bill Bolling.

The Republican Party currently holds the majority in the House of Delegates, and exactly 50 percent of the Senate. The breaking of tie votes falls to the Lieutenant Governor.

Virginia's General Assembly is the oldest legislative body in the Western hemisphere, founded July 30, 1619, in Jamestown as the House of Burgesses.

Although Toddy has represented most of us for the past 10 years, Adam Ebbin, Senate District 30 represents many of us in Mt. Vernon now in the aftermath of the redistricting. George Barker, Senate District 39 has a small group of constituents in the Western section of Mt. Vernon. In addition, Rob Krupika, House District 45 joins Scott in the northern region of Mt. Vernon and Mark Sickles, House District 43 has a few precincts as well. It is important that people know all of their representatives in Richmond. This is going to be a roller coaster of a session, no doubt.
