Mount Vernon Town Hall Meeting this Saturday; Woodlawn Stables Documentary Rough Cut Released!

Things have been quiet around the paddock this winter, but we have some upcoming events that will be important for the Woodlawn Stables family and the Mount Vernon community.

Fairfax County is hosting Mount Vernon’s 26th Annual Town Meeting this Saturday from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School. This is the opportunity to speak with our elected officials and County staff about issues important to us in the Mount Vernon District. The future of the Route 1 corridor and the Woodlawn Stables property is still in the planning phases, and input at every available forum is crucial to having the County know and understand the community’s perspective. The largest part of the meeting will be dedicated to a Q&A Session, where you can have the opportunity to speak directly with those who will be making decisions about future development in Mount Vernon. While the path of the realigned Route 1 has been set, there are still many open questions about future development of the property, whether or not the new stables ultimately get constructed, and what will happen to the community that has been built around Woodlawn Stables. We are urging anybody who is interested in these issues to attend the meeting, and make it known that the future of Woodlawn Stables and the Woodlawn property still matter to a great many people.

On another note, we received the rough cut of a powerful and moving film made about Woodlawn Stables by Christie Scanlin Dobson. Christie is a Mount Vernon native and her family ran Woodlawn Stables for a generation before selling it to the Mitchell family. Her heartfelt tribute to this special place features stories and commentary from many local citizens who have grown up with the Stables as a fixture in the community.
