War On Christmas: News From The Front

You hear a lot about the "War on Christmas" in certain circles.  To hear them tell it, wishing people "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" is the front line in this war on Christmas.

Let me say right up front, I have always been in the Jon Stewart camp when it comes to the "War on Christmas," meaning that, I think the whole thing is pretty stupid.  And I especially love the bits where Jon Stewart and the Daily Show writers skewer the war on Christmasers with biting, insightful satire.  It must go completely over their heads though because they're back every year like flies and mosquitoes are back every summer.  You'd think they'd be too embarrassed.

But I'm having a change of heart.  I hate to say it now, but I think the war on Christmas gang may actually be on to something. There IS a war on Christmas!

Look at the facts.  How else can you explain the fact that Congress cut unemployment benefits during record breaking national unemployment, and timed the cuts to take effect right after Christmas?  This action goes along with the cut to food stamps, all while maintaining agricultural subsidies, turning the war on poverty into a war on the poor.

Now, I'm almost positive that these same representatives went to Christmas services.  Being the upright and outstanding citizens they are.  I just wonder what story they heard told while singing Silent Night and holding their candles?

The story I heard was of a baby born in a barn, asleep in the straw of an animal feeding stall, and who quickly became a political refugee.

To do this during the celebration of the birth of the one who was born in solidarity with the poor, who lifted up the poor, and gave his life on behalf of the poor, can only mean one thing.  There IS a war on Christmas!  It's being waged by the US House of Representatives!
