MVHS Local History Day

The Mount Vernon High School Local History Day is February 2, 2012.  It will be held in the MVHS Media Center from 2:30 – 3:30.   The MVHS National History Honor Society under the leadership of sponsor Katie Rippy is chairing the local competition. This year’s theme is “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.”

If your students are interested in participating, they should inform their history or government teacher and contact Ms. Rippy in Room A114 right away and no later than Friday, January 20, 2012.    The top projects in each category will go to the District Competition.

This year, Mount Vernon High School has the honor of co-hosting the Virginia District Five History Day Competition with George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens; Gadsby’s Tavern Museum; the Alexandria City Museums;  and The National Museum of the Marine Corps.  The competition will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School.

The top two projects in each of the eight categories (sixteen entries) will go to the Regional Competition.  Additionally, Special Category Prizes are being offered by George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens; The National Museum of the Marine Corps; and The Sons of the American Revolution.

The winning two projects in each category at the Regional Competition will go to the State Competition in Williamsburg, VA on April 21, 2012 at the Thomas Nelson Community College - Historic Triangle Campus.

The state contest winners will go to the National Competition at the University of Maryland, June 10-14, 2012.

One of the goals of National History Day is to make history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic, cultural and social experiences of the past.  Although it is not a class requirement for students to participate in this activity, we hope that interested students will choose to do so.

Please direct any questions you have about this event to Ms. Katie Rippy at AKRippy@fcps.edu or Esther Manns at esther.manns@fcps.edu.
