“NEW TRENDS IN GREEN DEVELOPMENT”
June 9 summit to focus on environmental benefits of revitalization
Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation (SFDC) will host “New Trends in Green Development,” a community event that will highlight the positive environmental benefits resulting from commercial revitalization activities in the Richmond Highway corridor. This community event will feature presentations from public and private sector experts in several fields related to environmental planning and design and will offer citizens the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists.

The summit will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012, from 9:00-11:30 a.m. in the Lecture Hall at Carl Sandburg Middle School, located at 8428 Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria. The event is sponsored by: Kositzka, Wicks & Company; McGuire Woods LLP; and Walsh Colucci Lubeley Emrich & Walsh PC. Attendees will hear from our expert panelists about the different ways in which good planning by the county government and responsible developers is resulting in improvements to air and water quality.
Topics will include: county initiatives to improve stormwater quality and reduce runoff; plans and ordinances that help reduce driving; how revitalization can reduce the amount of paved surfaces and treat stormwater; energy efficient building and site design; and ideas for using Richmond Highway revitalization to improve the environment.

The four featured speakers will each represent a different perspective on environmentally friendly revitalization: architect/urban designer Matt Hopkins from StreetSense will discuss how private developers are implementing energy efficient building designs; Trini Rodriguez from ParkerRodriguez will highlight best practices in master planning and site design; Noel Kaplan from the Fairfax County Department of Planning & Zoning will outline the county’s planning initiatives that promote environmental responsibility; and Bruce McGranahan from the Fairfax County Stormwater Management Division will give an overview of the county’s efforts to improve stormwater quality and flood control measures.
