Mount Vernon Teen Headed to GOP Convention

Evan Draim, 17, will represent Virginia's 8th Congressional District in Tampa.

Seventeen-year-old St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School student Evan Draim of Mount Vernon is headed to the Republican National Convention next week in Tampa, where he will be the youngest of more than 2,000 delegates, according to The Washington Post.

Draim won one of three delegate spots from Virginia’s 8th Congressional District in the spring. He took the most votes of all seven who competed for a spot, even besting Charles Hokanson, a former chairman of the Arlington GOP.

Drain will turn 18 before the General Election, which made him eligible to serve as a delegate. He lives in the Mount Vernon area with his parents. His father works at a law firm in Old Town.

“I thought it was necessary to have a younger, newer face represent the Republican Party,” Draim told the Post. “We’ve been stereotyped in such a way that many young people would never consider voting for a Republican. I’m trying to go down to Tampa to tear down a lot of preconceived notions about who makes up the Republican Party.”
