MVHS Athletes Inducted into Hall of Fame

For the first time, Mount Vernon High School formally inducted alumni into the athletic Hall of Fame.

Eleven athletes who played or coached at Mount Vernon High School were honored Saturday night in the school's first-ever Hall of Fame Banquet.

In years past, inductees to the Hall of Fame would be notified and their picture would be hung outside the gym. Director of Student Activities Bob Maxey decided to change that.

“This was one of those situations where none of the Hall of Famers has ever been formally inducted,” Maxey said.  “This is our first go at it; it’s a bear trying to find people.”

Technically, 80 athletes are a part of the MVHS Hall of Fame. Saturday night, eleven people were inducted from the class of 1955 through the class of 1999.

The event included a reception, dinner, tours of the gym and Hall of Fame area and a ceremony complete with honorary plaques.

One of the inductees Saturday night was Edwhar Nunez who played football for MVHS in the 90's.  He was a kicker whose exceptional skill landed him a spot on the varsity squad as a freshman.

“It was fun and very exciting; it was a challenge,” Nunez said.

Back at MVHS for the banquet, he said he would like to come to campus and see a game or two in the fall.  Nunez said he is honored by his Hall of Fame induction.

“It’s something special,” Nunez said.  “It means a lot to me.”

In the future, MVHS Hall of Fame nominations will work a little differently.  The criteria will change to favor student athletes who graduate in good standing from Mount Vernon High School and then move on to college.  Nominations will be submitted each spring and a selection committee will get together in January.  No more than five athletes will be inducted each year.

Maxey said honoring inductees with a banquet and ceremony is good for the school, and good for the athletes who gave so much to MVHS when they walked the halls as students.

“In today’s economy, it’s advantageous to get alumni in the community involved,” Maxey said.  “It’s also a way for the school to honor its athletes.”

The inductees who were honored Saturday night are:

Eric Brent, 1982

Billy Davis, 1980

David Knight, 1969

Brian Miller, 1984

Sherri Miller, 1989

Edwhar Nunez, 1992
