MVHS Students Look Ahead to New School Year

For students, the end of the first week of school is just the beginning of a promising school year.

Patch spoke with four student leaders about their expectations for the upcoming school year and got their advice for incoming freshmen.

Freshman class president Anastasia has a positive attitude about starting high school and is looking forward to activities like Homecoming week and football games. She enjoys her classes so far and appreciates the freedom of high school. She says the freshman class has shown interest in participating in school-wide activities.

"As freshmen, we want to be Majors," Anastasia said of her classmates' spirit. "It's our first time being involved in these activities and we want to be excited."

Adel, a senior, is the Student Government Association (SGA) president. He has been working with his fellow class presidents and SGA members to come up with ways to unite the MVHS community and make it feel more like a family.

"We want to create a Major identity," Adel said.

He added that the SGA has started a mentorship program where 120 upperclassmen are assigned freshmen to help navigate through their first year of high school.

"Usually freshmen don't think they can talk to upperclassmen," Adel said. "We want everyone to be more comfortable."

As a senior, Adel said the biggest changes he's experienced is seeing new teachers at MVHS, as well as a change in rapport with his teachers.

"The teachers treat us like adults," Adel said. "It's a different level of respect between teachers and students."

All of the students are looking forward to Homecoming.

"Homecoming is a lot of work but it's so much fun," sophomore class president Lanaya said.

Lanaya said each class will work on a float that will be judged during Homecoming week. In past years, the classes worked on chicken-wire figures displayed during Homecoming week.

The upperclassmen encourage freshmen to get involved in activities, meet new people and find their niche during their first year of high school.

"Get out there," junior class president Savion said. "Get people to know who you are."

"It's all about having different experiences, and relying on school and your friends can't be the only thing you do," Adel said.

"Absorb it," Lanaya said. "Pay attention. You can get involved in activities but being a student comes first."
