Hundreds of works from students were on display Friday night.

Creativity was the norm at the fourth annual MVHS pyramid art show Friday night.

"We do get some cultural variety here," said Chris Klinke, IB art instructor and one of the coordinators of the art show. "That's what I love about Mount Vernon."

Hundreds of works of art from students in the Mount Vernon pyramid were displayed. Students, parents, and teachers mingled while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and punch.

"It has more of a gallery opening feel to it, which we wanted to go for this year," remarked Mike Feeney, MVHS fine and performing arts chair.

Feeney estimates that 1,000 pieces of art were displayed in this year's show.

"From my classes alone, we have 300 pieces. Each teacher has at least 80 to 100 pieces and there are eight teachers at MVHS," Feeney said.

Works from International Baccalaureate art students were also displayed in this year's show. IB art student Miranda Carroll's watercolor pencil pieces were inspired by one simple concept.

"The theme is hope and holding on to it and always having it with you," said Carroll.

One group of IB art students teamed up to create a sculpture that drew crowds.

"We kind of started to create a destroyed city," said senior Kevin Moran, who worked on "Apocalypse Now" with friends Kieran Bouregois and Mark Vocal. "We worked on it on and off for a good year."

"Apocalypse Now" is a chilling depiction of a city ravaged by a tornado and a tsunami. The trio was inspired by "Godzilla" and the concept of a superhero swooping in to save the day.

IB students are encouraged to independently explore their creativity.

"I love them because I can do whatever I want," said Carroll. "We aren't assigned assignments and [Klinke] gives us feedback."
