Local Officials Announce Funding for New Turf Fields at Alexandria High Schools

West Potomac and Mount Vernon high schools will receive an estimated $1.5 million from FCPS & Fairfax County carryover funds to complete the fields.

VOICE, along with Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay and FCPS school board member Dan Storck, celebrated their progress to improve youth recreation facilities along Route 1 Friday before a game at West Potomac High School.

According to a recent news release, West Potomac and Mount Vernon high schools' Athletic Boosters raised more than $50,000 each to put towards new fields. The groups and local officials announced Friday that both schools will receive an estimated $1.5 million from FCPS & Fairfax County carryover funds to complete the fields.

VOICE congregations include Bethlehem Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and Mount Vernon Unitarian Church — which all worked together with the high schools to press for improved fields and recreational facilities.

The school and athletic organizations recognized McKay and Storck for their support of the Turf Field Task Force in their effort to improve student athletes' facilities.

McKay has been working toward getting turf fields for all the high schools that serve the Lee District. A turf field has been built at Lee High School, thanks to a Springfield Town Center proffer, said McKay's office on Friday. McKay has also been working on funding for a turf field for Edison High School and ground breaking will take place in the next few months.
