Majors Girls Basketball Take On Washington-Lee Tonight

Five must-see events this weekend from around the region

Mount Vernon Girls’ Basketball vs. Washington-Lee- Friday, January 20 at 7:45 p.m.

Mount Vernon can complete its regular season sweep of Washington-Lee Friday evening. In their last two outings, the Majors have outscored opponents 193-38 and have moved to seventeen in the Washington Posts’ All-Met rankings.

The Majors defeated Washington-Lee 83-47 in the teams’ first meeting earlier this month. Washington-Lee is coming off a 42-20 win over Stuart on January 17.

West Springfield Girls Basketball vs. Lake Braddock- Friday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m.

No April Robinson? No problem. Logan Battle helped fill the void left by the absence of Spartan sharpshooter April Robinson, who went down earlier this season with an ankle injury. Battle, a  2012 Georgetown University commit, turned in two 20-point efforts this week and helped West Springfield climb to seventh place in the Washington Posts’ All-Met rankings.

The Spartans look to grab their sixth consecutive victory this Friday at home against Lake Braddock. A win over the Bruins would also give West Springfield an 8-0 Patriot District record and all but ensure a regular season Patriot District title.

Thomas Jefferson Boys’ & Girls’ Swim & Dive vs. Langley- Friday, January 20 at 6:00 p.m.

With one meet remaining in the regular season, Jefferson swimmers host Langley Friday evening at the Audrey Moore RECenter in Fairfax. Both boys’ and girls’ swim teams share just two losses while combining for 10 victories, three more than they totaled last season. Both enter Friday’s meet having won their two previous contests (Herndon, Fairfax).

The 2012 Liberty District Tournament begins on Friday, January 27.

Hayfield Wrestling Dual Team Championships- Friday, January 20 at 6:00 p.m. & Saturday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m.

Hayfield wrestlers head to Mount Vernon High School this Friday and Saturday to compete in the 2012 National District Dual Team Championships. On Friday, Hawk grapplers face Yorktown, Wakefield and Washington-Lee. And on Saturday, they'll tussle against Mount Vernon, Jeb Stuart, Falls Church and Edison.

Robinson- Boys’ Swimming vs. Oakton- Friday, January 20 at 8:30 p.m.

Robinson can finish its regular season with a winning record with a win over Oakton Friday evening at Fairfax’s Audrey Moore RECenter. Oakton is undefeated this season with six wins and the Rams have won two of their last three meets.

The Concorde District tournament commences next weekend.
