Majors Suffer Defeat At West Potomac

Mount Vernon loses 51-7 in season opener against rival Wolverines.

It wasn't a glorious night for the Majors varsity football team on Thursday. Losing 51-7 against their rival West Potomac was nothing short of embarrassing, not only for the team, but to all of the fans that traveled out to West Potomac High.

After a half-time score of 28-0, fans were already filing out of the stands, no longer drawn to the event that should have been marked with pride instead of the disappointment they left with.

The Majors did manage to score one touchdown late in the third quarter, an impressive 49 yard run by senior running back Sadiq Oyedele. They were outshone by the Wolverines on both sides of the ball, and let 569 yards go to West Potomac offensively.  They did little to take advantage of any situation given to them, either (like the 16 penalties that West Potomac incurred).

One such penalty in the first quarter, a personal foul against West Potomac that failed to negate their interception from the Majors, spelled a bad sign for the Majors. The frustration and panic weighed heavy on the Mount Vernon boys after the Wolverines took advantage of the interception and nabbed a touchdown after two quick plays.  The Majors were stunned, and never seemed to recover.

Mount Vernon head coach Barry Wells was also baffled by his team's performance. "I was expecting more than what we got," he said. "We thought we had a solid plan."

Wells expressed hope, however, of being able to bounce back after the defeat.

"This is a test of fortitude for us," he said. "For Marshall, it's going to be back to the drawing board."

The Mount Vernon Majors will play Marshall in an away game next Friday.
