MVHS Girls' Basketball Hosts Senior Night Game

Basketball players and managers celebrate accomplishments at tonight's senior night game.

Two MVHS senior basketball players and two managers will celebrate their accomplishments at tonight’s Senior Night game against Falls Church.

Guard Elizabeth Owusuwaa, 18, and forward Lafatima Gray, 17, will lead the team in a bittersweet senior night game. Both players have been on the team for four years and have helped lead the Majors to countless victories.

“I don’t want to leave,” said Gray. “The basketball team has been a part of me. I’ve known them all for so long that it’s so hard to leave them.”

Managers Irene Brobbey, 17, and Colbert Osei-Owusu, 18, have been a part of the team for two years and have learned a lot of valuable lessons over the years.

“I learned that being a manager, you get an insight of how basketball is,” said Osei-Owusu.

Brobbey added that she learned that although the managers support the team at games, she learned that the “littlest things mean the most.”

All four seniors agree on one thing: their teammates feel more like a family than a team.

“Our team isn’t a team, it’s more like a family,” said Gray. “I feel like I can talk to them about anything inside and outside of school.”

Coach Courtney Coffer is in his fifth year of coaching at Mount Vernon. He said that all four seniors are “high character kids” he had the privilege of coaching.

“It’s definitely going to be an emotional night on Friday,” he said. “To see them walk out the door will be tough, but I know they’re going to have a great future ahead of them.”

The Majors are 19 and 1 this season and aim to add another win to their scoreboard tonight.

“We’re going to win this game by a lot. We just want to improve at this point, the season’s winding down,” said Coffer. “We’re just going to keep pushing over the mountaintop. When we get there, watch out – we’re going to be dangerous.”

“I’m looking forward to being 20 and 1," added Owusuwaa. "We’re dangerous.”

See the Majors take on Falls Church tonight at 7 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School.
