Summer Camp Options in the Greater Alexandria Area

Summer is right around the corner, and a variety of area camps offer fun and learning for kids of all ages.

Before you know it, the last bell of the 2012-2013 school year will ring and your kids will have more than two months of school-less days.

To keep your kids active in sports and activities and educationally challenged during their long summer vacation, now's the time to sign up for one or more summer camps that include everything from science and sports to performing arts.

Here's a quick line-up of a few area summer camps scheduled in the Greater Alexandria area:

Arcadia Farm Camp

This year, Arcadia Center for Sustainable Agriculture will offer its second annual Farm Camp for kids between the ages of six years old and 12 years old. Camp will run from July 8 to Aug. 2.

Kids will have the opportunity to learn more about farming and food. Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with extended hours from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre

Mount Vernon Community Children's Theatre hosts a camp for three two-week sessions in July and August: July 1-July 12 (no camp on the 4th of July); July 29-August 9; and August 12-23. Campers range in age from five years old to 13 years old. Kids will learn acting skills and musical theatre skills.

Browne Academy

Camp at Browne Academy will run from June 17 to Aug. 9. Browne offers camp programs for preschool- to middle school-aged children. Browne's camp programs provide an array of age and developmentally appropriate activities for its participants.

Summer camp activities at Browne include horseback riding, physical activity and education and fun activities that include lessons on the history of the United States.

Fairfax County Park Authority

Each year, Fairfax County Park Authority offers summer camps for local children. This year, Park Authority will offer an array of summer camp programs including performing arts, one or dual sport camps, adventure and aquatic camps.

The closest FCPA facilities for Greater Alexandria and Mount Vernon are the George Washington RECenter and the Mount Vernon RECenter.

County summer camp programs are offered for children between the ages of three and 18.
