10 Tips for a Successful Yard Sale

It's that time of year, when we clean and purge and I'm sure you are wondering how to have a successful yard sale.  Here are 10 tips to remember.

1.  Make it multi-family if you can.  Multi-family yard sales will typically draw bigger crowds.  If you can get your street or community involved, more participants usually mean more traffic.

2.  Signage.  Use only one color poster board for your neighborhood signs.  Pick something bright like yellow, pink, or orange.  Pick a medium size poster board to hang on lamp posts and signs.  The bigger poster board will actually bend and blow in the wind, and no one will be able to see the sign.  Make "YARD SALE" and the arrow as big as possible.  Write in the date, time, and address in smaller letters.  The folks who are driving through are more apt to follow arrows.  Here is a sample of how the sign should look.  On that same note, be sure to post as many signs around the neighborhood as you can with arrows going in the correct direction.

3.  Advertise!  Use your community newsletter, email chain, and free newspapers (online and print) to advertise.  The Patch is a great place to advertise your yard sale!  This time of year, the yard sale section is typically in a lot more prominent location.

4.  Expect early birds and be ready early.  When we hosted our community yard sale last year, about 30 minutes before it was to start, we had folks in trucks drive through to start buying.  The "hard core" yard sellers will be out early.  Expect them, greet them, and sell to them.  Don't fuss them for being early or you may miss out on a great $3.00 or $30.00 sale!

5.  Run an electric cord from your house to your yard if you are selling anything electronic or anything that needs to be plugged in.  People will want to see if it works.
